Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran and stressed the urgent need for peace and stability in the region, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Friday.
Netanyahu briefed PM Modi on the recent developments, including Tel Aviv’s military actions under “Operation Rising Lion” launched in response to Iranian aggression. PM Modi reiterated India’s longstanding commitment to peace and emphasized the importance of restoring calm in the region.
“Received a phone call from PM Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. He briefed me on the evolving situation. I shared India’s concerns and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region,” Modi posted on X following the conversation.
Separately, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also spoke with Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar to discuss the ongoing conflict.
“Received a call this afternoon from FM Gideon Sa’ar of Israel regarding ongoing developments,” Jaishankar said on X.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement expressing India’s deep concern over the rising hostilities between Israel and Iran, especially in light of reported attacks on nuclear sites.
India urged both nations to exercise restraint and avoid any steps that could further escalate tensions.
“Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both countries and stands ready to extend all possible support,” the MEA said.
Israel’s military confirmed on Friday that it had launched a “precise, preemptive strike” on Iranian military targets, including nuclear infrastructure, citing national security and retaliation for prior attacks.
The rapidly unfolding crisis has raised international alarm, with global leaders calling for immediate diplomatic intervention to prevent further destabilization in the Middle East.
